INTRODUCTION TO WORLD OF DARKNESS SPECIES
Role-players might want to consider the following when choosing their character. Though of course these are just observations and not suggestions of what you should or shouldn't play.
-
Mortals: Perhaps the most diverse of all the World of Darkness. They can be touched by the supernatural with just a hint of numina or fully immersed in it as a ghoul. They can be born in to it as a kinfolk. Or they can be pure regular human. Pure regular humans free of choosing disciplines or powers tend to build their abilities and items far more quickly than other splats.
-
Vampire: The Cainites (also called Kindred), are descendants of Caine (the Biblical Cain), cursed with a thirst for blood, vulnerability to sunlight and immortality. They are forever subject to the Beast, their raging animal urges of hunger, fear and rage.
-
Shifters: According to their own mythology, the Garou (werewolves) were designed to be Gaia's fangs and claws and they are quite adept at this. However there are many more breeds of shifters, such as Large Cats, Coyotes, Ravens, etc.
-
Mages: Also calling themselves the Awakened, are one of the seven supernatural races in the Classic World of Darkness and the principle characters of Mage: The Ascension. In the World of Darkness, every human being has a single spark of supernatural potential. Most people, known as Sleepers, don't know they have this, don't care and want to get on with their lives as if it didn't exist. Some people though, figure out what that spark is. That spark is very important, because sometimes that potential activates and the normal everyday, average mortal Awakens.
-
Hunters: A Hunter is an ordinary human who has dedicated themselves to fighting the supernatural and protecting humanity from the encroaching darkness. The vast majority of hunters work on a small scale, either solo or in small groups called cells. These hunters defend a small area, such as a town, city neighborhood, or sacred area from supernatural creatures. Alternatively, they may dedicate themselves to hunting down a particular type of creature, such as vampires, werewolves, mages, and so on. They are no different from regular mortals for the most part other than that they can take numina.
